Monumental diptych by Pierre Debatty (b. 1966), titled Paysage de lumière, executed in oil on canvas and dated September 2000. Both canvases measure about 150 × 105 cm, making the overall width approximately 210 cm. On the backsides the artist’s name, title, dimensions, the indications ‘Gauche’ and ‘Droite’, and the dating are inscribed. The right panel is signed bottom right. Debatty builds the landscape from airy, largely abstract color fields. Crème, off-white, soft pink, and sand colors predominate, interspersed with accents in light blue, ochre, and rust brown. Horizontal bands run from one canvas to the other, deliberately linking both panels into a single composition. On the left panel the structure is denser and earthier, with vertical and horizontal brushstrokes that suggest an architectural or landscape rhythm. As it moves to the right, this structure gradually dissolves into a large, light and almost monochrome field. Delicate passages are alternated with locally thicker paint, transparent overpainting, and a few drips. The tension between matter and open space defines the character of this diptych. Artist biography Pierre Debatty (Uccle, 1966) is a Belgian painter who studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi and later studied painting at La Cambre in Brussels, where he graduated in 1990 and worked as an assistant until 1994. He has been exhibiting since 1988 in Belgium and internationally. According to his artist archive, his work is held in public collections in Wallonia and Brussels and in museum collections in La Louvière, Charleroi, Ixelles, and Louvain-la-Neuve. Debatty has received, among others, the Talens and Unisys prizes in 1988, the Prix des Arts du Trait from the Académie Royale de Belgique in 1994, and the Prix de la Province de Liège in 1997. His painting moves between abstraction and landscape, with light, space, geological structures, and landscape traces recurring fundamental themes. In addition to his artistic practice, he taught painting at art academies in Charleroi and Namur.
