PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR. "Baigneuse assise tournée à gauche (Paule Gobillard)".

PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR. "Baigneuse assise tournée à gauche (Paule Gobillard)". Drypoint on wove paper, circa 1888. I. 9.7 x 6.0 cm; S. 22.2 x 16.5 cm. With frame 42 x 32 cm. Fossier, "Nouvelles de l’Estampe", 139; not described by Delteil. Renoir created this scarce drypoint, known in only a handful of proof impressions, for an unpublished article by Roger Marx (1859-1913), the Parisian art critic, a steadfast and early supporter of Impressionism. The sitter is believed to be the artist Paule Gobillard (1867-1946), a Post-Impressionist painter, and the niece of Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet, the brother of Édouard Manet.
