Philoctetes by Derek Overfield Painting 43.0 x 55.0 :: Title: ""Philoctetes"" Artist: Derek Overfield Philoctetes - bearer of the mythic bow of Heracles injured and marooned for a decade - through the words of Sophocles rages at the commanders of the Greek forces that abandoned him on a desolate isle on their way to Troy. His comrades had tired of his painful cries following a dreadful serpent bite to his foot. Through trickery (and later reason) Neoptolemus and Odysseus attempt to bring the great sufferer to Troy - as it was foretold that only he and his legendary bow could turn the tide of the war. Unwilling to forgive the Greek forces Philoctetes is only convinced once a deified Heracles appears and confirms the prophecy as well as the promise of healing and glory. In this large painting the figure reaches for his foot perhaps in comfort perhaps in remembrance of the long suffering now gone. Above is a semi-abstract figurative work done from life. The work is completed using a subtractive/additive method utilizing latex paint. The piece is sold unstretched. It can be restretched either inexpensively at a frame shop or DIY and presented in a gallery wrap style. It ships in a sturdy tube rolled. Statement ""...and around his head the fair goddess set thick a golden cloud and forth from the man made blaze a gleaming fire... there he stood and shouted... and when they heard the brazen voice of the son of Aeacus the hearts of all were dismayed."" - Homer The Iliad My work is influenced by the classical and the romantic the archaic and the modern - and strives for the monumental divine and quietly brutal. Through paint and line I seek to capture the light of existence that ""gleaming fire"" as well as to portray its gravity. I strive to celebrate the figure its mysterious power and charisma. Like a purging fire I hope to burn away the ornament the unnecessary in order to expose the purity beneath. :: Type: Painting Medium: Acrylic Style: Contemporary Subject: Figures & Portraits Width: 43.0 Height: 55.0 Depth: 2 Weight: 3.5 lbs Framed: no :: All art on Zatista is original and signed.
