PHILIPPINES. St. Augustine Monastery Silver Medal, 1930. NGC MS-63. Honeycutt-210. Diameter: 41.5 mm. By Crispulo Zamora stamped on edge. Obverse: St. Augustine standing facing left surrounded by baby angels and clouds within solid border, legend around "QUASI SOL REFULGENS, SIC ILLE EFFULSIT IN TEMPLO DEI. *S. AUGUSTINUS*"; Reverse: Central plaque with inscription "RECUERDO/ DEL/ XV CENTENARIO DE LA MUERTE DE NTRO. PADRE/ SAN AGUSTIN/ SUS HIJOS LOS/ PP. AGUSTINOS Y RECOLETOS DE FILAPINAS", two shields above with floral ornamentation around, building facade of San Agustin Church below, "MANILA - 1930" above. This nicely preserved example displays rich old cabinet patina with lovely iridescent hues that pop out when tilted in the light. The devices retain much frostiness in contrast to the somewhat subdued semi-reflective fields. A pleasing example of this seldom encountered issue that is sure to excite many collectors. Located in the walled city of Intramuros, Manila, the historic San Agustin Church is the oldest functioning Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. Built in 1607, along with four other Philippine churches it was designated a UNESCO World heritage site in 1993, under the collective title Baroque Churches of the Philippines. Estimate: $300 - $500.
