PHILIPPINES. Scholarship Bronze Medal, ND (ca. early 20th Century). NGC MS-64 Brown. Honeycutt-916. Diameter: 41 mm. Obverse: Half-naked woman right holding skull within square border, legend above "COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL/ FOR/ SCHOLARSHIP" and in exergue "LT. COL. HENRY J. NICHOLS/ U.S.A."; Reverse: Caduceus within wreath, legend above "SCHOOL OF HYGIENE AND PUBLIC HEALTH/ UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES". This near GEM example displays lovely mottled brown patina with a slight iridescent sheen. The surfaces are relatively smooth with boldly struck devices. A seldom encountered issue with good eye appeal and much originality. We were able to locate little in the way of what is known of Lt. Col. Henry J. Nichols' time in the Philippines other than after he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps on 7 July 1906 after graduation from the Army Medical School. Due to his aptitude for research was sent to the Philippines where he was assigned to the United States Army Board for the Study of Tropical Diseases from 1907-10. His studies relating to Beriberi eventually resulted in the elimination of the disease among the troops. Estimate: $100 - $150. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection.
