PHILIPPINES. Philippine Numismatic and Antiquarian Society (PNAS) Silver Medal, 1981. NGC MS-66. Honeycutt-771. Diameter: 46 mm. Obverse: Bust of Pope John Paul II left, legend around "*VISIT OF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO THE PHILIPPINES*1981"; Reverse: Philippine Numismatic and Antiquarian Society Coat of arms within a circle, legend around ".PHILIPPINES NUMISMATIC AND ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY. INAUG. MAR. 16, 1929". This nicely preserved high relief medal offers boldly struck devices with an attractive two tone appearance. The reverse does exhibit a more even coloration lending to its pleasing appearance. A seldom encountered issue with good eye appeal. When Pope John Paul II visited the Philippines, it was his first pastoral visit to that country. It took place one month after President Marcos officially ended Martial Law. During his time in the Philippines he held several public masses, met local communities and Muslim leaders and performed a beatification ceremony of Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino Martyr. Estimate: $200 - $300. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection. To view all items from the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection, click
