PHILIPPINES. Hispanic Heritage Day Silver Medal, 1953. UNCIRCULATED. Honeycutt-444. Diameter: 37 mm. By Cejalvo. Obverse: Conjoined busts left, legend around "ESPANA - FILIPINAS DIA DE LA HISPANIDAD"; Reverse: Eight-line inscription within wreath "LAS / UNIVERSIDADES / DE / FILIPINAS / A LA UNIVERSIDAD / DE / SALAMANCA / 1255-1953". With original ribbon and suspension with four-line inscription '"EL ORO" / MILITARY JEWELER / JOSE TUPAZ JR. / MANILA. PHILIPPINES". Nicely preserved and attractive, this sharply struck example displays a lovely brushed antiqued finish. The University of Salamanca obtained papal recognition and universal acceptance of its degrees in 1255. Later in 1611 with the founding of the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest university in Asia founded in Manila, structured itself to follow the major universities of the Hispanic world such as Salamanca. Then in 1953 the common cultural ties were reaffirmed with the full integration of the Philippines into the institutional and political projection of Hispanidad (Hispanic Heritage).
