Overall an attractive example for the issue with a pleasing appearance and good eye appeal. The Exposicion de las Filipinas was held in Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid, Spain from 30 June to 30 October of 1887, under the presidency of the Queen Regent, and was met with great anticipation. The aim of the exhibition was to present the broadest possible picture of culture, industry, and the environment, there was even a human zoo set up with more than 40 "Naturales" to recreated the way of life of the indigenous Filipinos. To our knowledge 30 gold medals, 71 silver medals, 110 bronze medals and 323 honorable mentions medals were awarded. The artist Melecio Figueroa, a skilled and famous Filipino sculptor and engraver, designed one of the most prolific and influential images seen on Filipino coinage. This design, the iconic imagery depicted on Philippines coinage under United States of America administration, was used from 1903 to the 1960s and features a woman standing left holding a olive branch and hammer with volcano in background. Though no longer in use, this design still remains an important and influential part of modern Filipino history and culture. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
