Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Circle of - San Giovanni Evangelista

Antique 17th-century painting Oil on canvas sixteenth Dutch? (seicento fiammingo) / Work published Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Antwerp 1640) Field of “The Evangelist John” Author: Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Antwerp 1640) Field: Flemish School of the 17th century - Antwerp Stylistic references: Circle of Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) Title: The Evangelist John (Der Evangelist Johannes) Dating: Early 17th century (ca. 1620-1635) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 46.5 x 37.8 cm Provenance: Workshop of Antwerp Bibliography: Plantin-Moretus, Antwerp, 2004 Description and art-historical appraisal: The painting depicts the Evangelist John in a pose of intense mystical inspiration, with the face turned upward and immersed in a warm light emerging from a dark background. The composition, of strong emotional impact, recalls rubensian models for its dynamic, chromatic quality and the rendering of the flesh. The work is attributable to a high-level workshop production of the Antwerp circle, with evident stylistic affinities attributable to the circle of Jacob Jordaens. The piece draws inspiration from Saint John the Evangelist depicted by Rubens in the right panel of the Diptych of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ (Fig. 11), currently housed at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The same prototype was used by Antoon van Dyck for a similar painting (Fig. 12), currently housed at the National Museum of Oslo (Norway). Conservation status: Very good, with patina consistent with the period and without noticeable chromatic alterations. Re-lined/restored previously - with Expertise and legally compliant certificate of authenticity The work is offered with the frame shown in the photo. * extraordinary work in person - Ideal for collectors and investment * Given the importance of the work, it will be sent only with secure packaging and insured shipment based on the estimated value * For historical interest and in compliance with the provisions of the Italian superintendence of Cultural Heritage, the work cannot be shipped and sold outside the borders of the European Community.
