PESTLE TABLE Polynesia, Austral Islands, Ra'ivavé Island 18th/19th century Ironwood (Casuarina?) with a patina resulting from age and use H. 17.5 cm – L. 67 cm – W. 51 cm The tabletop has been cleaned and smoothed Provenance: - Sotheby’s Auction, New York, African, Oceanic, and Pre-Columbian, May 9, 2006, lot no. 13 Table used for pounding the fruit of the breadfruit tree and taro or papa’ia. The underside of the table is reinforced in the center with a thickened section and tapered at the edges to distribute and absorb the constant blows of the pestle.
