All auctions / Asian Art / Persian Seljuk Kashan Pottery Bottle, Black Under Turquoise Glaze

Persian, Islamic, Nishapur. Iran, Seljuk Period, ca. 12th–13th century CE. A stonepaste (fritware) bottle with a compressed globular body on a short foot, rising to a narrow neck with a bulbous section and a cup-shaped mouth. The decoration is painted in black slip under a glossy turquoise glaze, the signature palette of Seljuk Kashan. A band of flowing, looped scrollwork, probably derived from cursive script, circles the shoulder above a broad black band at the lower body, and a further black band rings the base of the neck. The glaze stops above the foot, leaving the white body exposed. Over the centuries the glaze has taken on soft silvery iridescence and the earthy patina typical of excavated Seljuk wares.
