PEPPER (Terence). — Camera Portraits by E. O. Hoppé, 1878–1972. London, National Portrait Gallery, 1978. Narrow 8vo (approx. 24 × 16 cm), paperback, cover illustrated with a photograph by Hoppé, 32 pp., numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions. First edition of this exhibition catalog, published to mark the centennial of the birth of Emil Otto Hoppé (1878–1972) and the exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery in London from June 30 to September 3, 1978. The catalog was written by Terence Pepper, who had just been appointed curator of photography at the National Portrait Gallery; this was his first catalog published for the institution. A German-born photographer based in London, Hoppé was one of the most sought-after portraitists of the first half of the 20th century. The book traces his career, including a biography, chronology, and bibliography, and features reproductions of a selection of his famous portraits. The exhibition featured, among others, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, Vita Sackville-West, Anna May Wong, Albert Einstein, George V, Queen Mary, as well as numerous figures from the theater and the Ballets Russes. The cover features Lady Lavery accompanied by her young Indian servant, a photograph from 1914 and one of Hoppé’s most striking images. The catalog is now an interesting little document on the institutional rediscovery of his work in the late 1970s. A decent copy, but the cover shows fairly significant wear: scuffs and scratches, small surface tears, and worn corners and bottom edge. The interior appears clean, with the price “15 €” written in pencil on the title page.
