Pentti Sarpaneva - Amethyst - Bronze, Turun Hopea - Necklace with pendant

Pentti Sarpaneva – Turun Hopea - Finnish brutalist bronze pendant with purple amethyst – Auringonkehrä or 'Sun-wheel motif' – circa 1974 Special and very characterful vintage bronze pendant with chain, designed by the renowned Finnish designer Pentti Sarpaneva. The large circular pendant has a diameter of 6 cm and is executed in Sarpaneva’s recognizable sculptural and brutalist-modernist vocabulary. The openwork design consists of strong, organic relief structures that radiate from the center outward and are alternated with curved and concentric elements. The deep dark areas in the relief beautifully contrast with the warm gold-bronze tones of the metal and give the pendant a pronounced three-dimensional character. Centered is a fine purple amethyst. The natural color nuances and texture of the stone form a particularly beautiful contrast with the patinated bronze. The pendant is worn on a robust matching bronze link chain, giving the piece the look of a typical Scandinavian statement jewelry piece from the sixties and seventies. Signed Pentti Sarpaneva The reverse side is clearly marked: P. SARPANEVA – FINLAND – BRONZE This documents both the designer, Finnish origin, and the material used. Pentti Sarpaneva is among the well-known names in Finnish modernist design. His jewelry is characterized by sculptural shapes, strongly textured surfaces, and the use of bronze in combination with colorful stones and other decorative materials. Designer: Pentti Sarpaneva Origin: Finland Period: ca. 1960s–1970s Style: Finnish Modern / brutalist / modernist / Scandinavian Modern Material: bronze Central stone: purple amethyst Dimensions: Pendant: Ø 6.0 cm Chain: L 68 cm (adjustable) Total weight including chain: 55.5 g Signature: P. SARPANEVA – FINLAND – BRONZE Condition The pendant and chain are in good authentic vintage and pre-owned condition, with normal aging and wear commensurate with the age. The bronze has a beautiful naturally developed patina, where the dark recesses further emphasize the pronounced relief. This patina is preserved and forms an important part of the character of the piece. The purple cabochon presents itself beautifully.
