Original advertising poster based on a watercolour by Paul Daxhelet (signed at the bottom right) showing the dance of the local African village chief Anka in the then town of Paulis (1934 to Congolese independence in 1965), the current Ituro. Ituro is the capital of the Haut-Uele province in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town lies between the rainforests and the savannas. The area around the town is known for its coffee plantations and is therefore also called the "capital of the green gold". On the reverse side, advertisement for the products of n.v. Recherche et Industrie Thérapeutique (R.I.T.) from Genval in Wallonia. This plate is part of a series of 10, issued by this pharmaceutical company. Gorgeous work. Paul Daxhelet (1905-1993) Paul Daxhelet was a multi-talented and diverse Belgian painter of landscapes, portraits and genre scenes. Daxhelet first exhibited as an engraver. However, he was also a skilled draughtsman and painted in both oils and watercolors. Paul Daxhelet was a Belgian painter and printmaker. Daxhelet was a pupil of François Maréchal, Jean Ochs and Emile Berchmans at the Academy of Liège. Daxhelet undertook many trips around the world, including to the Belgian Congo (from 1951), India, South America, Polynesia and Senegal. His picturesque travel paintings, drawings and watercolours are colourful. Daxhelet had a smooth figurative style which separated him from common expressionism.
