Paul Ceulemans was an artist who lived in Kalmthout, and in the 1930s produced countless drawings in which he not only documented in great detail the topographic location of his view of the Kalmthout Heath, but also paid a lot of attention to the light and weather conditions. Some of his works lean toward Expressionism, while others—like this one—are conceived more in the spirit of Impressionism. An exhibition devoted to the work of Paul Ceulemans and his brother Hendrik Ceulemans was mounted in 2017 at the Arboretum of Kalmthout. Since 2015, the municipality of Kalmthout has a collection of 217 works by this artist.
