Title: Reading ㅤ School: Catalan School (20th century) ㅤ Author: Pascual Bueno Ferrer (Barcelona, 1930) ㅤ Style: Catalan Post-Impressionism with luminous influence ㅤ Technique: Oil on canvas ㅤ Condition: Condition of conservation in line with its age. The frame shows minor signs of aging and wear on its gold finish. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: The work is inscribed within the Catalan figurative tradition of the 20th century, within a post-impressionist current characterized by chromatic richness, expressiveness of brushwork, and study of light. Pascual Bueno Ferrer’s painting received influences from French Impressionism, especially during his training in Paris. His pictorial language shows stylistic affinities with the luminist sensibility of Joaquim Sunyer and certain chromatic approaches of Pierre Bonnard, although he developed a personal interpretation of the human figure and everyday environments. The composition also reflects an interest in intimacy and the psychological representation of the female portrait, characteristic of European figurative painting in the mid-20th century. ㅤ About the author: Pascual Bueno Ferrer (Barcelona, 1930) is a Catalan painter recognized for his figurative production with post-Impressionist sensibility. From a very young age he showed a notable inclination for drawing and painting, winning his first artistic prize in 1948. In 1956 he received important recognitions, including the Masriera Silver Medal for Landscape, awarded by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, as well as a scholarship that allowed him to broaden his artistic studies in Paris. ㅤ His training was enriched by stays abroad and by knowledge of European painting trends. In 1957 he held an exhibition at the Pinacoteca of Barcelona, and later developed a national and international exhibition career. His artistic production includes portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes, distinguished by chromatic intensity, luminous sensitivity, and an expressive brushstroke. ㅤ The work portrays a young woman comfortably seated in an armchair, absorbed in reading an open book resting on her lap. The protagonist appears slightly inclined forward, with her gaze directed to the pages and a serene, introspective expression, conveying an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. ㅤ The female figure wears a wide white blouse with long sleeves, masterfully built through loose and impasto brushstrokes that combine white, bluish gray, violet, and delicate pinkish nuances. The treatment of the fabrics shows a special sensitivity to light and volume, while the face, defined by warm brushstrokes, adds naturalness and psychological depth. ㅤ In the background there is a vegetal composition in intense yellows and greens that lights up the whole and creates an attractive chromatic contrast with the cool tones of the clothing. The armchair, depicted with ochres and soft greens, helps to create a cozy domestic atmosphere. ㅤ The composition stands out for the freedom of the brushwork, the synthesis of forms, and the expressive use of color. The artist manages to balance the chromatic vitality of the surroundings with the serenity of the protagonist, turning a everyday scene into an intimate and evocative representation. ㅤ The work bears the artist’s signature in the upper-left corner of the composition. ㅤ The painting is accompanied by an elegant ornamental frame of classical inspiration, with vegetal reliefs and decorative motifs in cream and aged gold tones. Its wide inner molding of light color, delineated by a fine gold line, provides luminosity and enhances the painting’s chromatic contrasts, creating a harmonious and refined whole. ㅤ Observations: The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging.
