A collection of 18 provincial letters plus 10 controversial essays in one quarto volume, brown calfskin, decorated spine, red-speckled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the *Lettres provinciales*. A copy strictly bound in its original period binding, without the general title page or the preface—a condition to be preferred; the 12th letter is followed by its *Refutation*, and the 17th letter is 8 pages long, the most sought-after edition. At the end, 10 pieces of controversy with the Jesuits have been bound in. From the libraries of Guy Pellion, Pierre Guérin, and Zierer. Foxing on the endpapers, split spine, restored caps.
