Melanesia, Papua New Guinea. A group of four woven fiber adornments from Papua New Guinea. The longest is a woven sash band using nylon cords in red and white edged with seed pods and decorated with cowrie shells along its length, and finished with tufts of white fur at the ends. Two arm bands include one of woven fiber with a nylon strap and attached shells, and another of woven cotton fibers densely faced with rows of shells, frayed at the ends. A double-stranded looped fiber necklace, sewn with small shells, carries a boar tusk pendant, a traditional emblem of strength and status. Objects of this type served as personal adornment and displays of wealth in ceremonial exchange. Item # 203916
