All auctions / Coins & Banknotes / Pamphylia, Side Obol Ca. 370-360 BC (No reserve price)

Pamphylia, Side. Ca. 370-360 BC. Obol (Silver, 11 mm, 0.44 g). Obv: Head of a lion to left. Rev: Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, pendant earring and necklace. Reference: SNG Paris 739. SNG von Aulock 4775. Side was a major port of Pamphylia, linking southern Anatolia with Cyprus, Egypt and the Aegean. Its inhabitants preserved the local Sidetic language alongside growing Greek cultural influence. The pomegranate, a familiar emblem on its coins, alluded to the city’s name, while Athena and Apollo were its principal deities. Under Roman rule, maritime commerce sustained a flourishing city whose theatre and monumental temples still survive.
