Large 27.3 cm antique Dutch 17th/18th century hand-forged iron 'gate lock' padlock with key. This enormous padlock has a shield-shaped design, a distinctive broad top that curves down around to the bottom. The hand-made rivets and the slight asymmetry are clear characteristics of the wrought-iron locks from this period. The lock has its original key and functions well and smoothly. Origin: This lock is believed to have been used in the Vlissingen Gate of the town of Middelburg, Zeeland. It was dismantled in the second half of the 19th century during the construction of the canal through Walcheren. Dimensions: Lock; 27.3 cm high - 17 cm wide - 4.5 cm thick. Key; 14.3 cm long. Weight: 4270 grams. Condition: In good, used condition; there is an old repair on the corner, see the last photo. See photos for the overall condition.
