Pablo Picasso, born in 1881 in Málaga, Spain, was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was a co-founder of Cubism and developed a wide range of styles throughout his prolific career. His work encompasses painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics and stage design, with groundbreaking contributions to modern art. Picasso is especially known for works such as Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), in which he experimented with form, color and abstraction to challenge traditional artistic norms. Picasso's works are among the most valuable on the art market. His painting Women of Algiers (Version O) was sold in 2015 for a record amount of $179.4 million. "Dora Maar" from 1937 showcases Picasso's beloved muse, the French photographer Dora Maar. This portrait, with its bold, expressive colors and distorted forms, is characteristic of Picasso's style during his surrealist and cubist periods. The face is fragmented, with exaggerated eyes and sharp angles, creating a sense of emotional intensity and complexity. The vivid yellows, greens and pinks reflect Picasso's emotional involvement with Maar, who frequently appeared in his works in the late 1930s and early 1940s. This work was created in the same period as his masterwork Guernica, when Picasso was deeply influenced by the Spanish Civil War. The fragmented and distorted character of Dora Maar reflects the broader themes of unrest and psychological depth that appear in his work from that time. The portrait has grown into one of Picasso's iconic images of women, symbolizing both personal and political struggle. In summary, Picasso's contributions to modern art are unparalleled and his works remain among the most valuable in the world. His portrait of Dora Maar from 1937 illustrates his unique ability to combine emotional depth with innovative form and color.
