Over his career spanning more than seven decades, Picasso went through numerous artistic phases and revolutionized the art world with new styles and techniques. He was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist, and stage designer, and played a crucial role in the development of modern art. Picasso showed artistic talent early on and began his training at art schools in Spain before moving to Paris in 1904, where he immersed himself in the center of the European art scene. His early works were heavily influenced by Symbolism and the fin de siècle art. In his Blue Period (1901–1904) Picasso painted melancholic scenes in predominantly blue tones, often depicting poor and marginalized people. Works like The Old Guitarist show his emotional sensitivity and the expressive power of color. After the Blue Period came the Rose Period (1904–1906), in which Picasso's paintings became brighter and more lively. He painted circus performers, Harlequins, and acrobats in gentle pink tones and vivid colors, such as in the work Young Man with a Pipe. This phase shows Picasso's increasing engagement with the human figure and a playful handling of colors and forms. Picasso's decisive breakthrough came in 1907 with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. This painting, depicting five distorted, cubistically rendered female nudes, is considered the beginning of Cubism, an art movement Picasso developed together with Georges Braque. Cubism broke with traditional perspective and instead relied on the simultaneous presentation of different views of an object. Picasso's paintings from this phase, such as Woman with Mandolin and Still Life with Chair-Caning, broke the forms into geometric fragments, creating a completely new understanding of space and form. Cubism continued to evolve, and Picasso experimented with various styles ranging from Analytical Cubism (1910–1912), which depicted a detailed decomposition of objects, to Synthetic Cubism, which introduced collage elements and flat shapes into painting. This phase was especially revolutionary, as Picasso not only painted but also integrated real objects, such as newspaper clippings or fabrics, into his works. After World War I, Picasso underwent a Neoclassical phase, focusing more on traditional, figurative painting. Works like Three Women at the Fountain show his reference to classical art and the monumentality of the human figure. In parallel, he experimented with Surrealist approaches, as seen in Woman with Blindfolds. However, Picasso was not only a formal revolutionary but also a politically engaged artist. His most famous work, Guernica (1937), was created in response to the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica by the German Air Force during the Spanish Civil War. This monumental, black-and-white work is a powerful anti-war painting that depicts the suffering of people and the horrors of war. Guernica is considered one of the most important artworks of the 20th century and demonstrates Picasso's ability to translate complex political and emotional themes into a universal visual language. In the postwar period, Picasso continued his artistic versatility and worked in various media, including ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking. He continued to develop new styles and motifs and produced a wide range of works from abstract compositions to highly figurative representations. Picasso's late works, often playful and experimental, show an unbroken creative drive and ongoing curiosity about new forms of expression. Pablo Picasso left behind an extensive and versatile body of work that covers nearly all areas of the visual arts. With his ability to push traditional boundaries and discover new means of expression, he inspired generations of artists and fundamentally changed the art world. His role as one of the inventors of Cubism, his innovations in sculpture and collage techniques, and his contributions to political art make him one of the most important figures in the history of modern art. In summary, Picasso was an extraordinary artist with boundless creativity and renewal that decisively shaped 20th-century art. His works reflect not only a deep engagement with human existence and the modern world but also a constant drive for innovation, which made him one of the most influential artists of modernity.
