Never framed. never exposed. - Pablo Picasso’s “Femme aux cheveux jaunes”, 1931 presents an intimate vision of the sleeping female figure, transformed through the radical simplification of line, colour and form that characterised Picasso’s work at the beginning of the 1930s. The woman’s pale lavender face rests heavily upon an enlarged arm, while her closed eyes, flowing profile and brilliant yellow hair create an atmosphere of complete repose. Against the intense emerald green and red-striped surface beneath her, Picasso uses sweeping black contours and broad areas of flat colour to turn the body into an almost sculptural arrangement of interlocking curves. The work belongs to the extraordinary period dominated by images associated with Marie-Thérèse Walter, whose presence inspired some of Picasso’s most sensuous and lyrical compositions. Its combination of classical serenity, Surrealist distortion and modernist abstraction connects naturally with Matisse, Modigliani, Léger, Miró, Dalí and the wider evolution of European modern art between the wars. With its sophisticated palette of lavender, emerald green, butter yellow, cream, black and vivid red, “Femme aux cheveux jaunes” has exceptional decorative strength in Mid-Century Modern, contemporary, Art Deco, eclectic and refined luxury interiors. The composition can look particularly striking against cream, warm beige, sage green, muted pink, burgundy or soft grey walls, framed in antique gold, dark wood or minimalist black. Its bold graphic contours combine beautifully with velvet, walnut, brass, marble, lacquer, ceramics and iconic twentieth-century furniture, making it especially suitable for a bedroom, living room, dressing room, entrance hall, private office or sophisticated collector space. Sensual without being theatrical and instantly recognisable as Picasso, it is also an exceptional gift for admirers of modern art, Parisian culture, female portraiture and twentieth-century design. For those interested in Pablo Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Léger, Miró, Dalí, Klimt, Lempicka, Chagall, Rothko, Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Hockney, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Kaws and Karl Lagasse, “Femme aux cheveux jaunes” offers a compelling combination of modern art history, expressive colour and unmistakable visual identity. Its museum character fits naturally within contemporary collecting culture, where fine art prints and modern masterpieces coexist with photography, vintage posters, sculpture, design books, Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Dior, Hermès and Gucci, as well as Lego, Star Wars, Pokémon and other sought-after collectibles. Serene, sensual and unmistakably Picasso, “Femme aux cheveux jaunes” captures the remarkable freedom with which the artist reinvented the human figure during one of the most celebrated periods of his career.
