With new Figures. - Amsterdam, Andries van Damme, 1723 - expanded and illustrated edition - (6) + (22) + (2) + (36) + 364 pp. - original parchment with handwritten title on the spine - 19 x 13 cm Condition: very good - very neat binding with very solid joints; gatherings somewhat loose in the block but attached; very neat pages (in the first five pages a small light moisture spot at the top, one plate and endpaper missing, otherwise no spots or stains: very neat, very fresh and very white paper). Very scarce binding and early print with various works of H.L. Spieghel. Provided with detailed and sharp copper engravings, including the often missing allegorical title engraving, all by I. Goeree. Engraved title plate shows Neptune playing the harp as he rides a dolphin through stormy seas. Title page printed in red and black with printer's vignette. With ex-libris of 'Bostoen'. Very neat, very fresh and very white paper! Charming and wonderfully smooth original parchment! Collector's item! Hendrik Laurensz. Spieghel (1549-1612) was an important Amsterdam writer and thinker who sought to elevate Dutch for literature, science and conversation. He is regarded as a precursor of Vondel, Hooft and Huygens. Spieghel was a poet, linguist and philosopher. He was the author of the first grammar of Dutch, the Twe-spraack, published in 1584 by Plantijn. In his ethical work 'Hertspieghel' he argues that man should turn his gaze to all that is beautiful, but above all strive for self-knowledge. Peter Vlaming was a Dutch poet and bookkeeper. On 9 September 1704 he studied in Leiden; for law. He became a bookkeeper for the VOC in 1719.
