Superb copy of the famous novel Maroussia by P.-J. Stahl (pseudonym of Pierre-Jules Hetzel) after a Ukrainian legend by Marko Vovtchok. A work crowned by the French Academy and published in the prestigious Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation. The illustration includes magnificent compositions both in the margins and in the text drawn by Théophile Schuler and wood-engraved by Pannemaker. The copy is complete with its publisher Hetzel’s BT catalog inserted at the end of the volume, announcing notably the publications “En préparation pour 1884,” which allows dating this print very precisely to the end of 1883 (for the 1884 New Year’s gifts). ** Characteristics and condition of conservation : - Top board: Full bright red percaline binding, richly ornamented with black and gold scrolls with the title stamped in gold in an oval cartouche. The plate is especially well preserved, gilding very fresh and lively. - Back board: Black decorative framing surrounding the Hetzel monogram central “JH,” very neat. - Edges: Entirely gilt on three sides (head, gutter, tail), maintaining a beautiful shine. - Binding / Spine: Original spine well preserved, joints solid without major split, headcaps and corners slightly rubbed with light wear typical for a binding of this age. Text block very well held and solid. - Interior: Fresh interior, occasional foxing not altering reading or engravings. A very beautiful collectible for lovers of Hetzel’s nineteenth-century bindings and art-binding. Prompt and careful shipping.
