ORTELIUS (Abraham). *Theatrum orbis terrarum*. No place, no date [in the colophon]: Antwerp, 1574. Folio, modern hardcover in vellum. Fourth Latin edition of the famous atlas by the Flemish cartographer and humanist Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), a work originally published in 1570 and considered the first modern atlas in the history of cartography. The atlas contains 70 beautiful double-page copperplate engravings. The frontispiece (leaf A1) and map no. 13 are missing. The dedication leaf is soiled, and the margins of the last leaf are discolored. There is a small tear with no loss at the bottom of map no. 8 and in the margin of folio A2 (table of contents); a small paper repair in the margin of map no. 43; and a small wormhole in the lower margin of a few maps.
