OROSE (Paul). Opus prestantissimum [historiarum]. No place, no date [in the colophon]: Paris, Jean Petit, September 18, 1510. Gothic in-4, vellum with original endpapers (modern binding). A rare Gothic edition, published jointly by Jean Marchant and Jean Petit. (Moreau, vol. I, no. 168.) A rhetorical chronicle devoted to the calamities suffered by humankind since the Creation of the world, written by Paul Orose (c. 390–420), a theologian and disciple of Saint Augustine. Copy containing text underlined in pen and a few old handwritten notes in the margins. Engraved coat-of-arms ex-libris of Count Goblet d’Alviella, a Belgian politician. The last sheet (x6), bearing Jean Marchant’s printer’s mark on the reverse (reproduced in Renouard, no. 708), is missing. Faint water stains on several quires; a stain at the bottom of sheet d1.
