Chinese Silk Rugs: Masterpieces of East Asian Weaving Art Chinese silk rugs rank among the most exclusive and finest textiles in the world. The Material: Pure Luxury These rugs are woven from pure natural silk. The use of silk for both the pile and often for the warp (the backbone) enables an extremely high knot density. The result is an incredibly fine, almost pictorial drawing of the patterns and a surface that feels incredibly soft and supple. Characteristic Luster & Appearance A hallmark of Chinese silk rugs is their luster. The silk reflects light in a unique way, causing the colors to shift depending on viewing angle and light—at times appearing delicate and pastel, at others deep and vibrant. Many of these rugs also feature a so-called relief cut (contour cut), where the patterns are sculpted to give them a three-dimensional depth.
