Chinese Silk Rugs: Masterpieces of Far Eastern Knotting Art Chinese silk rugs are among the most exclusive and finest textiles in the world. They combine a millennia-old tradition with the highest level of craftsmanship and are renowned worldwide for their exceptional quality and elegance. The Material: Pure Luxury These rugs are made of pure natural silk. The use of silk for both the pile and often for the warp (the underlying structure) enables an extremely high knot density. The result is an incredibly fine, almost painterly depiction of the patterns and a surface that feels incredibly soft and supple. Characteristic Shine & Look A trademark of Chinese silk rugs is their luster. The silk refracts light in a unique way, causing the colors to shift depending on the viewing angle and lighting—sometimes pale and pastel, sometimes deep and vivid. Many of these rugs also feature a so-called relief cut (contour cut), where the patterns are carved to give them a three-dimensional depth.
