Organizing a Reception for Prince Heinrich of Prussia

Breakfast for Prince Henry of Prussia and One Hundred Captains of Industry. Holograph and typed letters, telegrams and related documents, photographs, drawings, engravings and printed ephemera relative to an elaborate breakfast banquet, organized by Edward Adams in honor of the visit of Prince Henry of Prussia to the United States. New York, February 1902. Letters and documents bound into five albums with paper wraps. [ Includes, in small part :] CARNEGIE, Andrew (1835-1919). Autograph letter signed twice, once "Andrew Carnegie" and once initialled "AC" beneath an autograph postscript, Duneness, FL, 19 July 1902. Three pages, 165 x 125mm. Carnegie sends sincere regrets for missing the event, stating that the Emporer has "reminded the World that Germany was Anglo Saxon like ourselves of the English speaking race... it was the parent of that race. Let us hope therefore that if ever it be necessary, for the peace of the World, that our race should speak the needful word, that the three Great powers of Anglo Saxondem Germany, Britain & the United States will stand together, one in race & purpose." EDISON, Thomas A. (1847-1931). Autograph letter signed ("Thomas A Edison"), Orange, N.J., 18 February 1902. 1 page, 280 x 215mm. on Edison Laboratory stationery. Edison encloses a "corrected memo which perhaps would be better." Edison was referencing the published biography to be used at the breakfast. PRINCE HEINRICH OF PRUSSIA (1862-1929). Photograph signed ("Prinz Heinrich") on a large format cabinet card (133 x 215) by J. C. Schaarwächter, Berlin. Dated "1902" in ink at upper right corner. LANGLEY, Samuel P. (1834-1906). Three typed letters signed ("SP Langley"), Washington, 19 February, 10 & 12 March 1902. Two pages each, 170 x 113mm bifolia, on Smithsonian Institution stationery. Including an acceptance of his invitation and enclosing summary "of what you are good enough to call my 'achievements'" [not present], as well as two letters thanking Adams for the invitation and for the book memorizing the event. Accepting his invitation to the breakfast. SCHWAB, Charles M. (1862-1939). Typed letter signed ("CM Schwab"), New York, 24 February 1902. One page, 206 x 125mm. Bifolium on United States Steel Corporation stationery. Accepting his invitation. TESLA, Nikola (1856-1943). Typed letter signed ("N. Tesla"), New York, 17 February 1902. One page, 267 x 206mm. Concerning the upcoming event with Prince Henry of Prussia and the biography to be published in the event program: "I suppose that on such an occasion one may stand an extra coating of greatness, but I believe you have put on several. A few years ago Prince Henry showed interest in my high frequency experiments and honored me by repeating some of them. Your generous acknowledgment of my work in this field may recall them to His Highness' memory." " [ With :] Typed letter signed ("N. Tesla"), New York, 19 February 1902. One page, 267 x 206mm. Thanking Adams for his biography of Tesla: "You have given me the fullest credit without treading upon other people's corns. Had you made any reference to my two best productions along the high frequency and high potential lines of work, the 'Tesla' transformer and my system of wireless transmission of energy, it might have touched upon patent questions which would be out of place at such an occasion. Typed letter signed ("Geo Westinghouse"), Pittsburgh, 19 February 1902. One page, 266 x 213mm on his personal letterhead. Concerning details on the biography to be used in the program for the event. Other correspondents include Cyrus McCORMICK (1809-1884), Alexander Graham BELL (1847-1922, via telegram); Washington A. ROBELING (1837-1926, letters in a secretarial hand); Charles STEINMETZ (1865-1923, letter in a secretarial hand); J. Pierpont MORGAN (1837-1913, through his secretary), and numerous others. Edward ADAMS (1846-1931) was a well-regarded and well-connected businessman within the industrial world of Wall Street, serving as co-founder of the Nikola Tesla Company and president of Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power and Manufacturing Company, which built the first hydroelectric power plants in Niagara Falls, New York, among others.
