"Processionarius totius anni: secundum ordinem Cisterciensem". Circa 1550. Probablemente impreso en Zaragoza. 14,5x10 cm This processionals is printed in two colors, in Gothic typeface, with square musical notation in black on red four-line staff. Rubrics in red and large xilographic initials in red as well, in Lombard style. The text begins with the processional of the Purification of the Virgin ("Lumen ad revelationem gentium", with the "Nunc dimittis"). It follows the cycle of the liturgical year with the chants of Holy Week ("Feria quinta in parasceve": "Super omnia ligna cedrorum"), formulas of the "Gloria Patri" for the responsories according to the tones and other processions of the year. The processional was the chant manual book that the monks carried in the processions, where the antiphons and responsories that appeared scattered in the gradual and the antiphonary were gathered. This copy records the usage proper to the Cistercian order, whose chant tradition preserved particular features compared to Roman use. Two of its features, portable format and two-color musical printing, place it in the period before Trent. Then each order edited its own liturgical books. The early Cistercian-use processional prints prior to the reform of the Congregation of Castilla are very rare, and their intensive use in the choir explains their scant survival. To distinguish the edition, reference is made to the later reformed processional: the Liber processionarius regularis observantiae Ordinis Cisterciensis, of a different title, printed in Salamanca by Juan Bautista Terranova in 1569, with a frontispiece engraved of Saint Bernard. Bound in period brown leather over boards, tooled with vegetal motifs, with remnants of a metal clasp. This binding is very worn with areas of leather loss on the boards and spine. Inside there are traces of rust from the metal clasp, which have transferred to the first and last leaves. The first leaf is almost completely torn from the binding. Some pages have been restored, one written by hand and some with tears. At the end of the book, additional leaves with margins written by hand have been added.
