Very complete and traditionally crafted palm-leaf manuscript from Indonesia, locally known as a Lontar (specifically Lontar Prasi due to the rich illustrations). This manuscript is a fascinating cultural-historical object that testifies to the rich literary traditions in the Bali and Lombok region. Front (Illustrations): The front of the palm leaves shows highly detailed, finely incised scenes in the traditional wayang style. The scenes depict stories from classical epics (such as the Ramayana or the Mahabharata). The carving is rubbed with soot from burnt kemiri nuts to give the details depth, contrast, and a beautiful readability. Back Two different scripts What makes this particular manuscript especially rare and interesting for collectors is that the back is provided with two different scripts. This points to an intriguing cross-cultural exchange (possibly the Sasak culture on Lombok or Islamic influences on Bali): Sasak) to write Balinese script (Aksara Bali): The traditional, elegant Hindu script. The manuscript consists of 10 loose palm leaves, on the outer edges protected by two hand-carved wooden covers adorned with geometric floral motifs and sunbursts.
