Old knife with leather sheath – Dogon – Mali – Wood, iron and leather – mid-20th century Details Origin: Mali People: Dogon Material: Wood, iron, leather Length: 33 cm Period: mid-20th century Provenance: Collected by the seller Display stand: not included Description An old Dogon knife from Mali, with a wooden handle, iron blade and leather sheath. The piece has a strong ethnographic presence, with a very dark, time-worn surface and a raw, functional construction. The wooden handle is decorated with incised geometric motifs and has developed a warm brown patina from handling and age. The leather sheath is also decorated with incised patterns. It is worn and damaged, with splits, tears and losses, but this fragile condition contributes to the archaeological and deeply used character of the object. The iron blade is heavily oxidised and remains inside its sheath. The knife should therefore be appreciated primarily as an ethnographic object rather than as a functional weapon. A sober and expressive Dogon knife, interesting for its age, its incised decoration, its oxidised blade and its weathered leather sheath. Condition Worn condition, consistent with age and use. The blade is heavily oxidised. The leather sheath is in fragile condition, with cracks, tears, losses and surface wear. Wear, scratches, abrasions and small losses to the wooden handle. Please refer to the photographs. Included The knife and its sheath only. No display stand included.
