Of American Independence / Historical Interest: A large ‘Gadsden’ flag with characteristic coiled rattlesnake motif and the motto "Don't Tread on Me" over a yellow field, c1900, framed and glazed, 71 x 121cm The Gadsden flag originated during the opening months of the American Revolution and is named after Christopher Gadsden, a South Carolina statesman and Continental Army officer. Created in 1775, its distinctive coiled rattlesnake and the warning “DON’T TREAD ON ME” drew upon an already established colonial tradition of using the rattlesnake as a symbol of vigilance, unity and resistance. Gadsden presented the design to Commodore Esek Hopkins, commander of the newly formed Continental Navy, and it became closely associated with the revolutionary struggle against British authority. Over time, the flag has endured as one of the most recognisable symbols to emerge from America’s fight for independence Provenance: This framed flag was purchased from the private collection of a State Senator in Texas, United States, who passed away at the age of 88 and had inherited the flag from his father, a Colonel in the US Army
