NTSHEN ELEPHANT MASK Cameroon, Western Grasslands, Babanki style 20th century Wood with patina from use H. 98 cm – W. 30 cm A mask depicting an elephant whose tusks form a circle pierced by its trunk. The elephant, like the leopard, is considered a royal animal, and the use of an elephant mask is therefore a special privilege reserved for certain lineages. Whenever the elephant mask is present, it occupies the second most important position after the human mask. The elephant is the first to appear on the dance floor and the last to leave it, and, just as in real life, its movements are majestic and slow. The Babanki elephant mask is worn horizontally on the head (see photo).
