Formidable Triple Ducat of Mythical Rarity NORWAY. 3 Ducat, 1673. Christiania Mint. Christian V. NGC AU Details--Holed. Fr-12; KM-125; Hede-10; Sieg-78; NMD-4A; Delzanno-5a; Schou-3; Bruun-10145. Weight: 10.41 gms. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner. Small perforation at 12 o'clock and indecipherable graffiti in the reverse right field. Nicely struck and preserving much of the original luster. No matter the date, Norwegian gold coins larger than a Double Ducat are considered completely unobtainable, and of this particular type only three other examples have been recorded (The Danish National Museum; The Swedish National Museum and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg). Unlike certain other Norwegian gold issues from Christian V, which occasionally lack inscriptions and feature irregular weights, this type - with full legends on both sides, the date, and a precise weight of 3 Ducats - is undeniably a regular issue, though presumably struck for a specific purpose.
