North American School, 19th Century - The Battle of Cherbourg, June 19th, 1864 - A Naval Engagement Between the Confederate Commerce Raider CSS Alabama and USS Kearsarge during the American Civil War, oil on canvas, label verso, stretcher: 71.5 x 102.5 cm, frame: 82 x 112 cm. Provenance: The J & S Hemming Collection, Bourton-on-the-Water & London Lot 61 in Christie's 'Pictures, Drawings and Prints Particularly of American, African, Australasian, Eastern and Islamic Interest' Auction, 2nd November, 1979. The composition closely relates to the celebrated contemporary lithograph by Louis Le Breton (1818–1866), whose depiction of the battle became one of the best-known visual records of the action.
