Iron-Nickel with Widmanstätten Structure — The Campo del Cielo meteorite is an iron meteorite (IAB-MG class) found in Argentina, in the Chaco Province, in an area known for the fall of meteor fragments estimated between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. The region takes its name from "Campo del Cielo" ("field of heaven" in Spanish) due to local legends that spoke of "sky fragments fallen to Earth". Iron (Fe): ~92% Nickel (Ni): ~6-7% Traces of cobalt (Co), phosphorus (P), gallium (Ga), germanium (Ge) and iridium (Ir) Kamacite (iron-nickel alloy with low nickel content) Taenite (iron-nickel alloy with high nickel content) Troilite (iron sulfide) Graphite and schreibersite (iron-nickel phosphide, rare) The meteorite presents a rough, irregular surface, typical of the fusion crust formed during atmospheric descent. Some polished sections can reveal the classic Widmanstätten structure, characteristic of iron meteorites, which appears as bands of iron-nickel alloy crystallized slowly in space over millions of years. Cosmic age: ~4.5 billion years (formation) Fall date: About 4,000-5,000 years ago Isotopic analysis of the meteorite has provided information about the formation of the solar system. This Campo del Cielo specimen represents a fragment of the universe, a testimony to the birth of the solar system and the history of iron meteorites that have traveled for millions of years before falling to Earth. Its raw, metallic appearance, together with the internal Widmanstätten structure, makes it a fascinating piece for collectors and enthusiasts of mineralogy and astrophysics.
