J-159CT. New Jersey. December 31, 1763. 3 Pounds. PMG Choice Very Fine 35 Contemporary Counterfeit. No. 268. Plate B. Printed in red and black. "T" in box at left. Radiant sun in the middle of text. New Jersey Arms at lower left with intricate trio of border designs evident. False signatures of Richard Smith, Jonathan Johnston and S. Skinner stacked at right. Printed on slightly thinner paper than the genuine notes. Imprint of Woodbridge, New Jersey/Printed by James Parker with "nature leaf" vignette pioneered by Franklin bold and surprisingly detailed. Ironic admonition at top "To Counterfeit is Death." The Newman counterfeit appendix notes the following diagnostics within the red text: a lower "d" at the end of "and," a higher "D" in "December," and a thicker right upright of "H" in "THREE" (compared to the left). There were a mere 1,000 genuine notes printed for this higher denomination and as with many of these Colonial-era Contemporary Counterfeits, the false notes are far scarcer than the genuine ones. The Newman note was a vastly inferior PCGS Currency Very Fine 20 Apparent that sold for $1,175 in 2017. This seemingly under graded example should have no problem scaling the four-figure plateau as seasoned collectors of Colonials weigh in with their bidder paddles and electronically placed bids. Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Click here for certification details from PMG.
