Newfoundland. 1919 Air 3c brown ovptd 'First Trans-Atlantic Air Post April, 1919', fine mint with large part o.g. The stamp has a light vertical crease which is barely noticeable from the front. Signed 'J.A.R' on reverse by postmaster J. A. Robinson, the issue was intended for correspondence carried by Lieutenant H. Hawker on his transatlantic flight attempt. Very scarce-Gibbons notes that out of 200, 18 were damaged or destroyed, 95 used on letters, 11 given as presentation copies, and 76 sold in aid of the Marine Disasters Fund. Accompanied by 1978 Friedl Expert Committee cert signed by Herbert J. Bloch, who has also signed the reverse of the stamp. (SG 142) Cat £25,000 (S)
