New York, New York. Saint Nicholas Bank. 18xx $3. PCGS Currency Gem

A Deceptively Rare Proof on the Saint Nicholas Bank Type-II Santa Claus Vignette New York, New York. Saint Nicholas Bank. 18xx $3. PCGS Currency Gem New 65 PPQ. Proof. Plate B. Imprint of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson. New-York. Vignette of the St. Nicholas Hotel right of center with crowds and carriages in the foreground directly opposite a rounded counter emblazoned "3" seen at left. Below, bank title and associated guarantee text. Portrait of Peter Stuyvesant at left between a state die and "THREE." "Type-II" Santa Claus vignette at right depicting the gift-giving saint as an elf-like creature emerging from a fireplace with a sack of gifts upon his back attempting to evade detection from a house cat (and likely children) before hastily departing for the next house before the night is out. That composition is notably encountered here in the company of a rounded counter emblazoned "3" in the rightmost position of the top margin. This institution ultimately became the Saint Nicholas National Bank (Charter# 972) in 1865. PCGS Currency comments "Mounted on Cardstock." The Deceptive Rarity of Proofs on the Saint Nicholas Bank Overall, the Saint Nicholas Bank is one of the few institutions that can be considered "common" when it comes to Santa Claus Obsoletes. As a result, issued notes are readily encountered for denominations like the $1 giving collectors ample opportunity to represent this Christmas-related vignette within their own collections. Yet a caveat is warranted as issued notes greatly outnumber Proof impressions on this institution that ultimately became the Saint Nicholas National Bank (Charter# 972) in 1865. Two such examples sold recently in our Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction for $20,740 (Lot 20405) and $36,600 (Lot 20406) suggesting that a similar, but similarly impressive realization may be in the cards for this handsome odd-denomination impression which features the "Type-II" vignette at right. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Earlier ex. Roger H. Durand Santa Claus Collection.
