etherlands – 8-Piece Historical Medal Set – Dutch Republic & Golden Age – Ducaton / Silver Rider Inspired – 50 mm Complete thematic set of eight large Dutch commemorative medals, dedicated to important figures from the history of the Dutch Republic and the seventeenth century. The medals combine portraits and historical scenes with Latin-style legends inspired by the coinage of the Dutch Republic. The common reverse design is based on the appearance of a historical Dutch ducaton, also known as the “Silver Rider” (Zilveren Rijder). Medals included - Cornelis de Witt (1623–1672) Statesman and member of the States General, with a scene referring to Chatham. - Jacob van Heemskerck (1567–1607) Dutch navigator and vice-admiral. - Simon Stevin (1548–1620) Mathematician, engineer and scientist. - Johan de Witt (1625–1672) Grand Pensionary of Holland. - Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft (1581–1647) Dutch poet and historian. - Paulus Potter (1625–1654) Dutch painter, particularly known for his animal subjects. - Maurits van Oranje (1567–1625) Prince of Orange, with a scene referring to the Battle of Nieuwpoort. - Menno van Coehoorn (1641–1704) Military engineer and specialist in fortification. Design The obverses feature portraits, historical scenes and coloured elements, surrounded by the Latin legend: CONFOEDERATIO PROVINCIARVM NEERLANDICARVM with additional abbreviated Latin inscriptions around the lower border.
