West-Friesland – Enkhuizen – Dukaton (Zilveren Rijder) 1673 Noordelijke Nederlanden – Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden · West-Friesland · Enkhuizen · 1673 · Zilver A remarkable West Frisian dukaton, or Silver Rider, from 1673, connected to the minting operation set up by Dirck Bosch in Enkhuizen. For this issue the dies were produced by the prominent Amsterdam medalist and die engraver Christoffel Adolphi. The year 1673 belongs to the early series tied to Bosch’s plans for a patented coin in Enkhuizen. Front: Armored rider on horseback to the right, with a raised sword. Under the horse the crowned coat of arms of West Friesland with the two passant lions. Legend: MO · NO · ARG · CONFOED · BELG · PRO · WESTFRIS The monumental equestrian scene dominates the broad planchet; rider, horse, raised sword and the West Frisian coat of arms form together the characteristic image from which this type derives its name, Silver Rider. Reverse: Crowned Generality Arms of the United Provinces, held by two crowned lions. Beneath the main coat of arms is the small cartouche bearing the city arms of Enkhuizen for this Enkhuizen issue. Legend: CONCORDIA · RES · PARVAE · CRESCVNT · 1673 In unity small things grow. The dukaton is part of the impressive large-silver of the Republic. With this issue the type gains added significance through its direct connection with Enkhuizen, Dirck Bosch, and the stamp work of Christoffel Adolphi. The year 1673, coming shortly after the Rampjaar, places the coin in one of the most turbulent periods of the seventeenth-century Republic. The offered specimen convincingly shows the essential features of this special issue: the robust equestrian scene, the West Frisian coat of arms, the Generality Arms with both supporters, and the year 1673 define the coin image. The somewhat irregular planchet and differences in strike give the piece the pronounced appearance of seventeenth-century large-silver. A historically important West Frisian Silver Rider from 1673, closely linked with Dirck Bosch’s Enkhuizen mint plans and the medallic artistry of Christoffel Adolphi. A striking dukaton in which the provincial identity of West Friesland, Enkhuizen, and the symbolism of the Republic come together. References: Verkade 62.3 · Delmonte 1021/1021b · Davenport 4941A
