quartet of prints of Utrecht 1. "The STATES CHAMBER in UTRECHT, as seen from S. Jans Kerkhof." When: This building was originally the chapter house of the Janskerk, but after the Reformation it was used as the States Chamber (the meeting place of the States of Utrecht). Now: The building still stands and today is a well-known national monument. It is now part of the City Hall complex / Provincial House archives and is intensively used by Utrecht University (Faculty of Law). The richly decorated Baroque gateway that Jan de Beijer drew in the middle can still be admired at Janskerkhof. 2. "S. JANS KERKHOF seen on the MAIN GATE and the CHURCH in view." The large medieval Janskerk, whose outlines and windows can be seen in the background through the trees, still stands proudly in the middle of the square. Today the church serves as an ecumenical student chaplaincy and meeting center, and concerts and markets are often held. 3. “CHURCH OF S. PAULUS ABBEY in UTRECHT.” This shows the medieval chapel of the Paulus Abbey, one of the oldest monasteries of the city (located behind the current Korte Nieuwstraat). The abbey buildings and this chapel were largely demolished or incorporated in the centuries after the Reformation. 4. "The PROVINCIAL COURT in UTRECHT." This shows the buildings of the Court of Utrecht at Pausdam. This complex, originally partly connected with the Palace of Pope Adrian VI (Paushuize), served in the 18th century as the provincial court and the administrative center. 1/4: Maker / Publication: Created around ca. 1750 (after drawings by H. Spilman / C. Pronk or related 18th-century topographical print art). The abbreviations lower-left and lower-right on the print refer here directly to: J.d.B. del. 1736 stands for Jan de Beijer delineavit (Latin for: Jan de Beijer drew this in 1736). H.S. fec. stands for Hendrik Spilman fecit (Latin for: Hendrik Spilman made/engraved this). Originally from the well-known 18th-century topographical collection Het verheerlykt Nederland of Kabinet van hedendaagsche gezigten. This book was published in Amsterdam from 1745 by Isaak Tirion. Jan de Beijer traveled across the country to accurately capture city and village views, after which Spilman transferred the drawings in his Amsterdam studio into detailed copper engravings.
