Splendid and fascinating urban antique map, printed on contemporary wove paper and originally titled in the baroque cartouche “Harlingen.” This superb bird’s-eye view bears the signature of the renowned Amsterdam publisher and cartographer Joan Blaeu (1596–1673) and is taken from the monumental atlas of Dutch cities published in the mid-17th century. The work offers an extraordinary and meticulous topographical and architectural documentation of the 17th-century maritime town of Harlingen, located in the province of Friesland, showcasing with impeccable geometric precision its elaborate defensive system characterized by bastions, ramparts, and water moats. The engraving is distinguished by its rich decorative and historically valuable details. In the upper left corner stands the official coat of arms of Friesland supported by lions, while the opposite upper corner hosts the specific heraldic crest of the town of Harlingen, topped with floral motifs. In the lower left corner an elegant monumental cartouche with marine allegorical figures and tritons frames the dedication, balanced on the right by a second baroque architectural cartouche containing the numbered explanatory legend of the main buildings and streets of the town. The internal urban layout meticulously describes the course of navigable canals, private housing plots, churches, and the harbor facing the sea, where small period-rated sailing ships are inset. This refined print represents a precious historical testimony of rarity and undeniable collecting appeal, ideal for 17th-century vedutism enthusiasts or as an important antique piece.
