Dordrechtse Rekenpenning uit 1586 is een koperen rekenpenning (jeton) geslagen ter herdenking van de Engelse militaire en politieke hulp aan de opstandige Nederlandse gewesten onder leiding van de graaf van Leicester. Characteristics and Design • Origin: Struck in Dordrecht, in the Dutch Republic. • Material: Copper or copper alloy. • Obverse: Sword under a bright light or radiance wreath, with the name JEHOVAH, symbol of God's protection. • Reverse: References to Queen Elizabeth I of England and her support to the Netherlands. • Function: Serves as a counting token (used when calculating on a calculating board or on an abacus), but also acted as a propaganda token and political pamphlet in the Eighty Years' War. Historical Context In 1586 Queen Elizabeth I offered official protection and military support to the United Provinces against Spain. Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, was sent by her to the Netherlands to take command. This token commemorates that English intervention and the hope of assistance. The coin is well packaged and insured for shipment.
