All auctions / Coins & Banknotes / Netherlands, Deventer Rijderschelling 1686 (No reserve price)

Rijderschelling of the city of Deventer, dated 1686. Obverse: Crowned shield bearing the single-headed eagle of Deventer, flanked by palm branches. The denomination 6–S is positioned high beside the shield. The shield has a rounded lower edge, characteristic of the type catalogued as CNM 2.12.61. Reverse: Armoured horseman holding a raised sword, riding to the right. The surrounding Latin legend is partly legible, including RES PARVÆ and part of CRESCVNT. Historical and numismatic context: Deventer began issuing rijderschellingen in 1683, following a design already adopted by other provincial and municipal mints of the Dutch Republic. This six-stuiver denomination takes its name from the mounted rider. The eagle identifies Deventer’s municipal authority. The complete standard motto, CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCVNT, expresses the idea that through unity small things grow. Diameter: 26 mm Weight: 4.39 g Catalogue references: Van der Wis & Passon, CNM 2.12.61 Verkade 156.1 Purmer & Van der Wiel, HPM De 46
