eapolitan school (early XIX) - Nocturne in the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius erupting. 37 x 55 cm (without frame) - 58 x 76 cm (with frame). Oil on canvas, in a 19th century carved and gilded wooden "guantiera" frame. The painting depicts the Bay of Naples on a full moon night, with Vesuvius erupting at the centre of the composition. A column of smoke rises from the crater, lit by the glow of the lava flowing down the side of the cone. On the left the profile of the city can be seen, dominated by a tall bell tower, while on the right a brig at anchor and some distant sails stand out against the moonlight reflected on the water. In the foreground, beside a wooden jetty, a group of fishermen gather around two boats, one of them lit by a fire on board. The subject belongs to the popular production of nocturnal views of Vesuvius intended for Grand Tour travellers, in which the contrast between the cold light of the moon and the warm glow of the eruption was the main point of interest.
