Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) - Ritratto di Vecchio - NO RESERVE

AUTHOR Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) Italian painter. Born in Rossoreggio di Bettola, in the province of Piacenza, belonging to a family of painters along with his brothers Pacifico and Giuseppe, he built his artistic formation initially in Piacenza at the Art Institute "Gazzola", where he was a pupil of Bernardino Pollinari and Stefano Bruzzi, then perfecting his studies at the Accademies of Milan and Parma. His career was marked by an early and fortunate debut, culminating with admission to the Milan Triennial of 1900 and with the important association with the patron Giuseppe Ricci Oddi, who purchased his first historical genre works, the "Moschettieri", as early as 1908. Fundamental for his maturation were the long stays in Paris, where he worked successfully; here the artist, while remaining faithful to the solid constructive foundation of Lombard naturalism, opened himself to a personal reading of post-impressionism. In museums and Salons, Sidoli elaborated an audacious synthesis between the meticulous miniaturist technique of the Dutch seventeenth century or Meissonier and the chromatic and luminous vitality of French modernity. He returned definitively to Piacenza in 1920, initiating a phase of research that, after a brief Symbolist interlude, focused on the truth of everyday data rendered through a painting technique that remained vibrantly alive. In his poetics, portraiture occupies a central role, distinguished by a nearly Flemish care for detail and a deep psychological investigation. Sidoli immortalized historical and worldly figures, from the famous Buffalo Bill pastel (1905) to the portrait of Giosuè Carducci, up to numerous commissions for Italian and European aristocracy. Precisely through this genre, around the 1930s and 1940s, his style testified to a significant approach to the atmospheres of Magical Realism. In this period his painting, though still anchored in reality, became more sparse and silent; the precision of the brushwork and the crystal-clear light conferred on his subjects a solemn stillness and an almost timeless fixation, never abandoning, however, that chromatic vivacity, a living legacy of his Paris years, which prevents the subject from hardening into mere metaphysics, keeping it pulsating with color. Besides the intense portrait and religious activity — culminating in the frescoes for the Corpus Domini church in Piacenza — Sidoli exhibited his works in prestigious contexts, such as the Paris Salons and the solo show at the Bologna City Hall in 1933. His stylistic evolution, aimed at a synthesis between Victorian verism and the inquietudes of the Twentieth Century, is today documented in important public collections. The core of his works is kept at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna "Ricci Oddi" in Piacenza, but his paintings also appear in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna of Bologna and in international institutions such as the museums of Strasbourg and Biarritz. DESCRIPTION "Portrait of an Old Man", oil on panel, 45x35 cm, datable to the 1920s, signed on the back. The work presents in the foreground the scarred, bearded face of an elderly man, partially shaded by the brim of a worn hat. The strongly close-up framing and the subject’s slightly bowed posture suggest a sense of lived fatigue and silent introspection. The figure emerges from the canvas without rigid outlines, almost organically blending with the undefined background that surrounds it, in a composition that privileges the immediate emotional and evocative impact of the face over mere anatomical description. Formally, the canvas is dominated by an extremely free, fragmented, and tactile brushwork, built through a vigorous impasto of dense and overlapping touches. The chromatic play rests on a masterful and bold contrast: warm earthy tones, ochres and browns model the reddened flesh and the thick mass of the beard, dialoguing with sudden cool and bright strokes of turquoise and aquamarine, clearly visible in both the background and the hat details. This luminous and chromatic orchestration lights up the painting surface, giving the whole composition an extraordinary and vibrant visual dynamism. The painting fits perfectly into the phase of research the artist began after his definitive return to Piacenza in 1920, a moment when he intensely focused on the "truth of everyday data rendered through a vibrantly alive painting". The portrait, the undisputed center of his artistic doctrine, testifies to his ability to perform a "deep psychological investigation" of the subject, exploiting the happy insights matured abroad. The thus-material and fiery brushwork exemplifies the assimilation of the "vivacity of color and light of French modernity" discovered in Paris, which Sidoli blends with the "constructive solidity of Lombard naturalism" learned during his formative years, giving life to a work dense with tormented humanity. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. Work intact in all its parts with vivid and legible color and brushwork. The photo of the painting placed in an environment is generated with artificial intelligence, and should be considered purely exemplary. Only the remaining photos are valid, as they faithfully show the object and its characteristics, both in general and in detail. Tracked and insured shipping with adequate packaging.
