All auctions / Ethnographic / Navajo Pottery Pot Drum, Pitch-Coated with Painted Leather

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo. A Navajo pot drum whose earthenware body swells into a full lower belly before narrowing toward the mouth. The red-brown surface carries a coat of piñon pitch, brushed on while the vessel was still warm from the fire, which lends a glaze-like sheen and seals the porous clay. Dark fire clouds, the smoky signature of an open firing, drift across the walls. A suede-finished leather head is pulled over the mouth, bound beneath the rim with twisted cord. The head is painted with a bold black four-pointed star circled by dots. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 206123
